Sinking of the J. R. Williams

Here are pic's of a Historical marker & a painted 'mural' on a bldg of the J.R. Williams, & steamboat that was ran aground & robbed of it's supplies during the Civil War in OK Terrirory.
During the early days, 'Stand Watie' had a bad beginning, losing several skirmishes against Union forces , but later in the war was a brilliant tactician, & 'guerilla fighter', & one of the last groups to surrender after the war.
This was on the AR river, north of my home.

does the Canadian River flow into the Arkansan River??

Yes, just a few miles west of this site, we've found some great Artifacts & fossils on the 'gravel bars there.

If I read this right, the Confederate forces had troops made up of American Indians? If so, that's the first I've heard that little bit of history.

Confederate Indian forces, led by Cherokee Brig. Gen. Stand Waitie, were forced aground and captured the union steamboat, J.R. Williams, with cargo valued at $120,000, on June 15th, 1864.

Southern troops included Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles.

The tribes were divided in their loyalty, they fought for both sides, often changing sides when they were on the losing end.
The indians loyal to the Union were chased into Kansas, & spent several 'miserable' months, they had dogs by the hundreds, (for food).
Indians took part in the battle of 'Pea Ridge AR', & Wilsons Creek MO.

My book about the 'Civil war in OK' is packed away, but the State Historical society put up the 'Markers' about the battle, that's all I know.
The 'old Historical marker' read (The sinking of the J. R. Williams).
