Six Mile Canyon travels from Virginia City into the river valley Northeast of Dayton, NV and is one of the downhill discharge valleys of the Comstock lode. It has seen plenty of hardrock and placer mining and as I go tromp around in there I thought I would share some of the more interesting views with you.

S,hunter,

Beautiful country,
I love desert scenery.
More than that I love being a part of that scenery,
Great photography
Thanks for sharing
Thom

Many of the mines here are vertical shafts as that seemed to be the prevailing large scale mining technology of the day. They can be a little tricky as one can inadvertently enter one unwillingly if it's not marked.

This is a hardrock tunnel that is vertical for about 10 feet and then travels horizontally under a quartz outcropping.

Thanks Old Dog! I'm glad to be able to share my views and interest :)

I had walked all around this shaft but hadn't seen it until I was on the ridge directly opposite and saw the hardrock tailings and when I went to investigate, there it was as bold as daylight! ;D

Is that your Siberian ?
Beautiful animal.

I was blessed with one who chose me in Feb this year.
She came to me at 4 months old.
Found the owner and he gave her to me... said she wants to be here.
No strings.
She is a darling.
I've had some smart dogs but this one takes the cake.

They give a whole new meaning to the term "the dog ate it"

Thom

Yeah, I found him in the pound at around two years old.
He seemed to know right off the bat that I was there for him & let me know about it when I came back.

He's Siberian and wolf, very smart and trainable so long as he know what you want and it doesn't stray to far from what he wants ;D

Here is a picture of my freeloader. LOL

I agree they do have a tendency to need a reason for what you are trying to get them to do.
The look I always get is not "you want me to do what?''
It is usually "OK...But why?"

This one gave me no choice.

We found her as a stray and hunted up the owner.
He came out and told me to keep her, she was where she wanred to be.
she had escaped from his place and traveled the 2+ miles to get here.
she was hanging out around the back gate, and I brought her in for food and water,
she hadn't eaten since Tuesday... it was Friday night.
She was 4 months old then, she has made it to 8 months old.
which sometimes surprises me.

The real Irony of the whole thing was when I told my wife that this one looks like a Saasha
so we were calling her Saasha or saashy ...
It turns out that her registered name is ....Saasha, no joke.

Another dog isn't what I wanted. This makes 4 Big ones.
But for her I will make an exception.

She is my shadow.

Driving up six mile canyon the road passes directly below Sugarloaf mountain. This is a large granite intrusive that has been eroded to expose the lava tubes and main body of the intrusion. I have noticed a pile of tailings on the hill when driving by and have determined to investigate as time allows, so yesterday I climbed the ridge opposite and then up the hill itself.
It seems the tailings I saw are actually remainder's of a quarry site. The granite here is not as dense as the granite of the Sierras but served the purpose I guess.

I have been hiking the hills here often and have been mystified by the lack of predator sign as there is quite a bit of game and was gratified to finally have come upon a very distinct coyote trail and traveled it across the face of the ridge until it got into the dense undergrowth.

Howdy Thom,

When that day comes you give me a holler & I'll show you around the canyon :)

Your in a pretty scenic area yourself, no??

I think your right Brother ;D

That is some mighty nice country and I'm more than a little envious! If I do come out there you can feel confident that I'll be giving you a jingle for a tour.

I see that you note the Spanish presence and landmarks quite a bit, are you knowledgeable about their activities in your area? I think your right in the heart of the Spanish train

Hello Southernhunter, Great Post!
I have been to VC many times over the years, but have never drove down or explored 7 mile canyon.
Have you ever explored the old Virginia & Truckee roadbed? I have been wanting to check out the old mills along the Carson river and see if anything is still there..

Thanks for the pics
Steve

Great pix. I get out to visit friends in Gardnerville a couple time each year. I usually make a trip to VC. I always rent a 4x4 so I can check out some off the beaten path areas. Just gorgeous. I love the high desert.

Have you ever gone to the Nevada State Museum on the last Friday of the month when they run Coin Press #1?

Hi Steve & Fozzy :)

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I'm glad you like the pic's, I have since found some additional shafts that bear pictures, I've just got to climb up there with the camera again. I took my son to see some yesterday & he's aching to take a metal detector to check tailings ;D

Fozzy, I haven't been to the state museum as yet but I'll have to go check it out!

Hey Steve, seven mile canyon branches off of the paved six mile road and ends up on the hwy (341?) out of Virginia City. There's plenty of other 4 wheel fun to be had though although I tend to trek the hills on foot mostly.

I'm not sure where the Virginia & Truckee roadbed is but I have walked down the river from Dayton toward Moundhouse (west) and found some old mill sites there. There are wagon trails on both sides of the river I think all the way to Carson City.

Hi Southernhunter,
If you are up for some company, I live 30 min. from C.City and am there at least once a month shopping. PM me and lets go find some stuff!

The museum is an absolute must visit. You are in an area full of history and the museum is a great place to learn about the area.

HH
Steve
