I'm on vacation this week so I have plenty of time for digging. I have a 1925 built church less than a half mile away. I've been salivating to get in that yard. Well today I knocked on the office door and asked the Reverend for permission. He seemed hesitant at first. I assured him I would leave no trace that I was there other then it would be cleaner after I picked up the trash on the ground and in the ground. He seemed to think for a second then said "what If I find anything valuable?" I said we'd split it. With that he said go ahead. I was able to retrieve alot just with the coin probe. The ground is always wet so it wreaks havoc on the goodies. I spent around 5 hrs or more there not knowing if I could come back. Once again my legs are trashed. My first quarter was only a few inches down and very dingy as the pics show. I thought it was clad. 1944,not bad. My totals in silver were three Washingtons, two 1944's and a 1948.Two Rosies 1952 and 1959. A silver wartime nickel that the reverend thought was kinda cool so I told him to keep it. Also a US button of some sorts. I know very little about buttons. Maybe someone can help id it. Also 13 wheaties that are totally trashed. The sailing pin, broken skeleton key,a couple other keys, and a seine net weight I believe.57 mems,11 dimes,4 quarters and 6 nickels. The piece next to the US button may be the back of it. It seems to fit perfectly. I don't think I've ever dug silver that is this corroded. I tried baking soda with no luck. I have one of the quarters in peroxide right now and it's bubbling like crazy. Hopefully it will work. Much rather it came out shiny for me. I get a rush from seeing them come out of the ground all pretty. I went to see the reverend before I left trying to secure future digging there. He said he has to see what the trustees say. He himself has no problem with it. Hopefully I made a good impression. We'll see. To top it all off when I got home I had received my first issue of Western and Eastern mag.
Happy Diggins everyone,
Mike95inNJ

Very nice haul........thanks for sharing them ! WTG

I hope the trustees say yes...It looks like a great place and especially with the condition the items are coming out of the ground. The little ships wheel pin is great...looks like it was enameled at one time.Nice amount of silver for a day.

Nice finds Mike
That silver did come out a little "dingy", not that it matters. Great day and good sell to the pastor.

Congratulations on your finds. I hope the Rev. puts in a good word for you.

very nice finds! i believe the US button is really an army lapel pin. neat thing to find!

WOW! Way to go! Congrats! Those are some genuine finds!

Well done Mike! I like the ship's pin....congrads on the silver, excellent photos.

Looks like a combination of letting them sit in peroxide for awhile, then dipping in baking soda to clean is working. I now found out the 1948 quarter is really a 1943. I would never clean these if they were key dates or anything like that. Some of the wheats and mems are as thin as a old dime.Never seen corrosion like this on stuff this age.
I really want to get back out tomorrow to another place in the woods I'm looking at,but have a dentist appointment at 10:50 a.m. Uggg. Maybe afterwards. ;)

actually, the U.S. thing is properly called a coller disk. I believe that one is from WWI or WWII. Very nice finds!

Electrolysis

Mike,
If you go to the website gometaldetecting.com, there are clear instructions for how to build an electrolysis unit. I made one for cleaning non valuable silver and it works great. You probably have all the supplies laying around your house.

Nice finds and congrats! The US collar pin goes on the right lapel of a soldier's uniform. HH, Mike

Ev That was my next step. I had made one a few years ago. I have a mess of ac adapters laying about. Maybe today's project after the dentist. I'm putting my detector in the trunk to possibly hit a playground or chip area when my appointments over. Unless of course they have to start a root canal on my broken tooth. Here comes the pain.
