I found this quarter well dump digging a yesterday and I was wondering if I'm seeing things or not. I don't want to jump to conclusions and wanted some honest opinions. I did my best to get a close up of the date and although it doesn't look very clear to me I did notice what appears to be a flat spot on the top left hand side of the 8. I'm not even sure if its 1918 or 1928. Well enough talk. Is this the rare 1917/8s coin or not. Thanx for reading. Swiz

Is the pic just not clear enough? I'd really like someone's opinion on this one. Any help at all would be great. Swiz

Maybe some more pics will help. I just noticed this too. What is the M stamped on the right hand side for? Swiz

You might indeed have an 1918/7 SLQ. To my eyes, there seems to be a flat top on the 8 along with a sharp angle on the top loop of the 8. Hard to tell with the wear.

I won't be able to get to a con dealer until Monday morning. This has been killing me since I first saw that flat spot and the little bit in the bottom circle of the 8. This is one of those fly by night shops too so I know the guy is gonna try to lowball me with an offer if it is the overstrike. Even if it is I'll be surprised if he tells me the truth about it. there's gotta be someone else in this area that would know for sure and could give me a decent answer. Thanx for the bit on the stamped M. Now the overall condition is about the same as what you guys can see in the pic on the front as well as the back. Could you guys give me a rough estimate as to what the grade might be? Thanx for the help. Swiz

I was just hoping for a quick rough estimate. Nothing set in stone until I talk to a dealer type thing. I grabbed a few more pics. Let me know what you guys think. Swiz

This one is a tough one due to the wear on the date. I can see what you are referring to about the 8 but in a couple of the pics I can also almost see 1928. Will wait and see what the experts have to say.

Well the guy I took it too wasn't an expert. He deals with a bunch of stuff. Kinda like a pawn shop only no loaning process. He's on the fence about it too. He can see what I'm talking about too and at one point said that he thinks it is the overstrike but then kinda changed his opinion to just plain undecided. He said its a real tough call and that its in really rough condition. He graded it as poor. He told me that if it is an overstrike then in its current condition I'd be lucky to get $700 for it. There's no other coin dealers around here that I can trust with an honest answer. The only other guy I know offered my cousin $5 for a $2.50 gold coin. I can imagine how much he'd offer me for a silver quarter. The next question is now what do I do? Is there any place that you guys can recommend that would look at it, grade it and confirm yes or no on the overstrike for a small fee? I'm thinking that I'll have to ship this guy out to get an honest answer on it. Swiz

Hard to tell from pics but when comparing your coin to a definite over-date and a 1928 it appears to me that your coin is most likely a 1928. However, I do see what looks to maybe be an 8 over 7. :icon_scratch:

If you decide to send it in for authentication I would recommend PCGS as they have the best recognition in my opinion.

Well I guess that ain't gonna happen. I just checked out the site and to submit a coin I need to first have a membership. The cheapest one they have is a $50 membership. I'd really hate to spend that much before I can even deal with the other fees of grading and slabbing it. There's gotta be another way to do this. Personally I think its the overstrike. On a 1928 the rim would take most of the wear and the date should be more recognizable. I believe that's why this one is worn so bad is because its the older coin with the rim set down below the date. Granted even if it is the overstrike its a very poor example of one. Is there any other way I could treat this coin that would help to pull the date out a bit better? Swiz

It is not a 1928. In 1925 the date was recessed to eliminate the problem of the date prematurely wearing.

I have dealt with standing liberty quarters quite a bit, and I am 99% sure your is a regular 1918S. On the overdate, even with wear you can see the bottom of the 7 in the bottom loop of the 8. I do not see that in any of the pictures.

Alright, I guess I won't really know for sure until an expert puts it under his loop for a better look. If it turns out to be just the 1918s what would the value be in this condition. Swiz
