Here's the finds from a couple short hunts this weekend. These were recovered from a couple sites that Jeff and I have previously hit hard.
On Friday, I went out for alittle while by myself (Jeff had duty). This was a site that produced some nice finds in the past, but because of the amount of can slaw and trash I knew there were more nice things to be had, if you had the spare time and patience to go through and weed out the signals/trash. After about 20 minutes and my second hole I got a fairly nice button signal but to my pleasant surprise, out popped a Beautiful G.A.R. Medal! :headbang:
On Sunday, we went back to a different site that produced MANY nice things in the past. We went to dig the faintest of Iron signals in hopes of finding a spare button or coin. We didn't really get anything worth mentioning after about 1-1/2 hours of digging so decided to call it quits. Jeff headed out and but as I had nothing else to do for the rest of the day, I told him I was going to hang around for about 15 more minutes and then head out as well. As Jeff was driving out I got a Irony signal and dug down and it was a very old Pewter Button (lots of the old, deep pewter sound like iron here)....However, after about 15 more minutes I decided to call it a day and was swinging back to the car when I got another Irony signal, but this one seemed to be masking something as I was getting an ever so faint signal on the back swing! :icon_scratch: LETS INVESTIGATE! After digging and digging and digging down about 12- 13 inches I heard two distinct signals; one iron and the other a +78 on the MXT :hello2:. I took one more scoop of dirt with the shovel and scanned to find it in the pile of dirt....pulled out the pinpointer and it sniffed out a nice 1851 Seated Dime! :occasion14: IN this field, knowing how hard we've hit this place and no real signals to speak of, this was one hell of a find to sniff out in our opinions.
Here's the pics below, hope you guys like them :occasion14:

VIDEO (Note, I'm in a field NOT a yard, that's why it wasn't a big deal to dig down looking for it as it was NOT pinpointing at all with the big IRON 6 inches away~ )

Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Medal Pin (Union Civil War Soldiers' Organization)
(This was an autonomous piece but has a small bar to add a ribbon to the bottom if the veteran so wanted to.)

(Had to reinforce the Ribbon bar as it was barely hanging on.)

Example of Similar G.A.R. Medals: (These with optional Ribbons attached. The one on left shows that the Eagle Device on top was a seperate piece.)

1851 Seated Dime
(Uncleaned: Found probably 10 ft. from where I dug the 1875 Seated Dime a couple months back.)

Unknown Brass (Looks like it may have attached to iron from the remnants of Iron on the back and the iron stain on front coming from what looks like rivet holes.)

Maybe the rest of that badge is still there someplace...Nice Finds!

John

Well it depends John....Depends on if he wore the ribbon with this pin. This pin was designed to be worn autonomously (by itself) OR a ribbon could be attached if the person had some special honor or office within the G.A.R.. The person who lost this one may not have had any special office or honors and was only wearing the standard pin without any ribbons attached.

P.S. I like that avatar you had up earlier with the real Kentucky Button, that looked good I thought! :icon_thumleft:

GAR relics are very cool. I have my great great Grand father in a picture of a reunion they had all wearing their medals. I also have the very same GAR buttons from his jacket in the picture with his discharge papers. Nice hunt. Thanks for sharing.

That's interesting that your grandfather was in the G.A.R. Large portions of Appalachian East Tennessee were loyal to the Union; might he be one of those Unionist Tennesseans that fought as a Federal soldier? Very interesting history in that region and I love it all. I use to vacation in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Gatlinburg every other year as my dad and I are big outdoorsmen and we LOVED goin' up there to Do Whitewater Rafting down the Big Pigeon.

sweet relics n seated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MR TUFF

Nice badge Josh! I always love to see another seated dug too! I just dug #98th seated last week (in my hunting career)

Congrats again and am looking forward to your future digs!!

Larry

Very nice G.A.R. Badge and awesome reocovery on the old seated  last summer I dug a seated dime at about a foot myself. I've yet to dig a dime this deep with my V3i yet but I've dug some really deep stuff with it. That MXT is one sensitive potlicker. I was using the D2 coil on my MXT.

Nice medal Josh :icon_thumleft:
