✅ SOLVED Small iron spike

I found this in a farm field in central Alabama... Looks to be hand forged..nothing else found with it except one small late 1800 flat button. Can anyone Date this and tell what it?s use may have been thx

I'd also say smith made but for wooden shake shingles.

That is a wagon strake spike which secured the iron rim to the wooden wagon wheel. See page 7 of this attachment. I have found dozens of them in the encampments of the 1758 British campaign against Fort Duquesne (today's Pittsburgh) I grew up next to Fort Ligonier which is mentioned in this article and watched the archaeologists dig these spikes up. They were everywhere and in varying sizes.

Thanks for the ID Steve ... I thought it might have been a wagon part... there is no homesite on this property for it to be part of a building...just an old farm field.
