My only keeper of the day. Any idea how old or what it was used for?

I would say modern with the full metal. It may have had a wooden or rubber handle on it.

Cool old hatchet! :headbang: Dunno anything about its age though. :dontknow:

On some scrub land above ocean last month, as I was hoping to dig old Spanish gold coins under big ole tree, instead I dug an old hatchet head -- nice surprise as I love old tools. About twenty feet away I dug its eroded wood handle which my detector found only because there were a few metal brads in it. My hatchet isn't real old though. When I began this hobby a couple years ago, one of my first eyeball finds was a modern circular saw blade embeded vertically in a tree trunk about at my eye level -- my son & I had some laughs about that one, & yep, I took it home.
HAVE FUN! Andi

Hatchet, splitting kindling and not very old......clean it up and re use it!!

i agree, take a brushwheel on a grinder, clean it up an reuse it , very cool you should find a maker's mark/logo on it. i found an old stanley that i reused
