Small, organic material cap...or something/ [UPDATE]-"UNKNOWN ITEM"

I found this in the shallow water of a bay. It's a weird little piece. I have no idea what it could be. It feels to be made of some type of clay and will sratch. It came up as "iron 2" on my Bounty Hunter 3300, but I see no metal. It is quite fragile as well. I think it might be made by some type of organism around a piece of metal. Some aquatic creatures do this. A small piece came off and it crushed to powder when I pressed on it.
Any ideas?

That is a strange looking item. Does it attract a magnet? Breezie

I just tried a magnet. I used a very thin, fridge magnet and it attracted only around the top of the rim. But very lightly. I have a rare earth magnet, but my luck it would, somehow, destroy it. Another member said it looked like it had a copper hue to it and might be a wick holder from a lamp. I'm gonna take it to the local oceanic museum to see if they know.

!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!

I haven taken the little item to several people who are in the marine biology and antiquity fields. They looked and studied, but came to the conclusion that it must have been man-made and for purposes that are unknown. They said it could have been the top to someone's pottery art or any sort of "creation" that was discarded. No "glaze" used in finished pottery, wasn't "chewed" by an animal, and the MD/magnet was due to high iron content in the material.

Oh well, I'll keep looking for an answer, but for now it is "UNKNOWN".

Looks like an ink well, not sure why it is made of that material
