I dug this small (11mm) two-piece button today at a site where I have found relics from the 1700s and 1800s, and also a few Confederate relics. Before I cleaned it the S was "lined" like the lined Confederate Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry buttons. Unfortunately the back mark (if it had one) has corroded away.

I'm stumped; any ideas? Thanks in advance

I have no clue but i cannot wait to see what it is! Nice find bud and hope it turns out to be a good one!

Hi, it didn't have a backmark & I really doubt it had any Confederate connection. This one was found in Ontario, Canada & they didn't make it this far. I have this one boxed away believing it's civilian 1860's+, but I've never asked. US military buttons & coins around here, but earlier. Hope you learn something new for all of us. Good luck & HH

As I recall, I have seen these buttons at button shows in Baltimore classified as "personalized glove buttons."

Mud Hut, do you recall seeing other letters, or is this possibly the initial of the retailer?

Yes, there were other letters as well, and all sorts of designs.
