Question? Is it worth the trouble to convert your gold finds (rings, chains.etc) into bullion/bars (.999)? Can I actually get more value out of the gold this way? Should I smelt them myself or send the gold to a smelter? What can I do with the diamonds/semi precious stones?

Remove all semi precious stones and CZ's, diamonds of course. It isn't really worth it to smelt them yourself as a refinery will melt everything together anyway and test it for purity and pay you what ever percent they have set up. The refinery I use is Midwest at http://www.midwestrefineries.com/ which pay 94% of spot.

Its up to you. Most refineries wont pay you any more for doing the work, but if they have stones in them you might get some coin for the stones.

Refining takes a bit of effort. You can use electricity or chemicals. I have used both methods and either has it's pro's and con's. Then you have to melt it, gold melts at close to 2000 degrees. One mistake there and you are missing fingers. It's cool to show people a solid gold or platinum bar and say yep it's mine, I found em, I purified em and made this, but if you are just looking for the money, sell them as is to a refiner, overall it's just easier.
