Snorkle length question.....

How long can a snorkel be and still be safe. I'll be dredging shallow but might get deeper than 8" over my head. Air compressor is not an option due to the hike and weight.

a couple feet is all, never mind the carbon dioxide building up in the tube,
the pressure of the water on you rib cage will not let you take a breath.

if you're worried about bulk, might getaway with no expansion tank,
hook the hose directly to the compressor...

I used this method in shallow water only.

The absolute maximum is 16 inches (1 foot 4 inches). As winners pointed out even at 16 inches you will be putting a lot of effort into breathing as you go deeper.

I tried extending my snorkel with some plastic tubing and had a lot of trouble breathing.
