Snow's Gone=Tenn. C.S.A. Relics from Col. Allison's Cavalry Camp with Josh
We knew we were racing the rain in middle Tennessee this morning but Josh and I managed a 3 hour hunt before the drizzle started. Dman (Doug) is still making a good recovery from his shoulder surgery and VERY anxious to go relic hunting. We hope he can go with us in a few weeks. He was with us in spirit today anyway-LOL.
Today, Josh and I hunted the camp of Col. R.D. Allison's C.S.A. Cavalry Squadron. Dman and I have hunted that camp several times before and never failed to find relics. Josh and I worked the perimeter areas today. Col. Allison and his brother joined the 24th TN Infantry early in the war but they were discharged due to age. The Col. was in his early 60s when the CW began. He was determined to fight for his beloved South and formed 3 companies of C.S.A. cavalry. He was stationed around Alexandria, Tennessee from March until June 1863 and was commanded by Gen. John Hunt Morgan. When Gen. Morgan began his famous Ohio raid, he ordered Col. Allison's 90-100 man cavalry group toward Chattanooga (Attn. TN Mountains). They participated in the Chickamauga Battle.
Today's finds included 2 Sharps Carbine bullets, one Burnside Carbine bullet, One blunt nose Enfield bullet, one .36 cal. Colt pistol bullet, the usual round balls, pieces of horseshoes, and fired bullets. I dug an iron cinch strap ring in good shape and Josh dug the iron curry comb. He also dug the Eagle button in very fragile shape as shown. The shield of the Eagle was missing. Later, Josh carefully cleaned it and part of the button had fallen inside. It had a "D" in the shield and was a Dragoon cuff button (his first). I thought of you Jesse (Mainer) as we dug these relics and felt fortunate to have a few good hours to dig as we are expecting rain and snow for much of the week. HH, Quindy.
