Soil Probes

I had somebody recomend that I get a soil probe for searching for bottle pits, etc. How long of a probe should I get?

I had the septic tank people out last month and they had a nice probe. It was about 5’ with a T handle. He said he made it from a trunk spring from a Cadillac from the salvage yard. Maybe 1/4” in dia.? I’m going to try to get one from him when they install my new system.
