the rod you have is made of carbon. It was the core of an old battery like this one: http://www.rfcafe.com/references/popular-electronics/images/inside-dry-cell-apr-1959-pe-2.jpg
They ranged from the early 1900's to the fifties, so there's no real way to date the rods other than making assumptions based on the site.
