Some help please

I don't realy know much about coins,but would like to learn..A friend works at a gas station and saved these coins,The silver coins are good silver dates,And there are the wheat penneys too.But there are some of what looks like they have been plated.The guy wants 40.00 is it a good deal?Thanx in advance...Neo

How much in face value is there in the pre-1964 dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars. And what is the date on the Morgan dollar. From what I can see, you would be pushing it to break even on silver bullion value at $40 bucks, but if any of the silver or wheat pennies has some numismatic value, then yes it would be a decent deal. Need to know the dates or dollar amount of silver (pre-1964) to give a fair answer. And the silver pennies have been plated and are not worth anything but a penny.

Added: With silver at say $14 dollars per ounce, it will take $4.00 face value of pre-1964 silver coins to break even on silver value alone, this does not include numismatic value.

You know how much is actually silver. face value, like 4 quarters is a $1.00 etc. I see at least $3.00 in silver but can't tell what the dates of the Rosie dimes are. Silver is going for about $10 per dollar of silver coinage. Can't really tell any of the dates on anything so thats not much help of those peices.

Sounds like a decent deal then. What is the date and mintmark on the buffalo nickel? The mintmark will be on the back below the words five cents if it has one.

You can try this site. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ It used to be a free updated site, but now it is not updated and annoys you with stupid popups that want you to upgrade to a pay account. Just close the popups out and I think you can get a basic idea of what you are looking for. Does the buffalo have a date on the front (indian head) side of it? It looks like a date is still visible there.

No there is no need, there is nothing key in that lot, but the silver bullion value alone will cover your $40 bucks, so I say go for it.

Key dates are the coins that are usually the most expensive and hardest to acquire for a set. This is caused by low mintage figures for those Key date coins. In Wheat pennies, the key dates are 1909-s vdb, 1914-d, and 1931-s. Semi-key dates are usually not as expensive, but are harder to come across than "common date" coins. Next time you are in a book store, pick yourself up a couple of books or magazines dealing with coin collecting. I have a feeling you are already hooked and don't even know it.

It will help you get a really good basic start to grading

I would say $40 is about right, probably break even for you but still gives you a start, you can get a redbook of coins for the prices but you have to learn HOW TO GRADE coins, there are guidleines by numismatics community that determines the grade and the value between a Very good or VG coin and an Extremely fine XF can be $5.00 to $50.00 for some specimens.
