Some kind of mold????????

My friend found one half of a mold of some type. You can see old lead in some areas where it was left over from pouring. The whole thing is just under 2" diameter. The item molded would have been 1 5/8" long. What do you think it was for?

The two pieces fit together around the valves threaded stem. As the handle is turned, it raises or lowers the gate thereby opening or closing the flow. Look at the colored diagram of the modern valve below.
