My girlfriend and i are going through a box of nickels we got that was dated 2009 on the top so we thought it'd be something good. dear god i need advice.

so far... less then half way through the box we've found maybe 20 dollars worth of nickels dated 1963 through 59 in perfect condition with a goldish hue to them.... im going nuts there are so many all mint marks but each one i've flipped has 5 steps on the building.

please respond with helpful answers on what i should do. keeping them or if theres a market because these are all in very high grade condition !

I think it might be natural aging :icon_scratch: i do mostly nickels and i've seen that gold coloring a few times.

Re: Some one please help me haha!

i've seen the aging before and these all dont have a scratch on them. literally looks like none of them have been touched.

Re: Some one please help me haha!

Sort them by date and mint mark, put them away somewhere and forget about them. If nothing else, they are worth $0.07 melt.

Re: Some one please help me haha!

So just sort by date and mint? i mean i wish there was a market for them they're all pristine

Re: Some one please help me haha!

You can try throwing an add up craigslist, you never know, but I wouldn't count on it.

Re: Some one please help me haha!

craigslist is a good idea thank you man really appreciate it. any other ideas? clearly this is a wierd box it ended up being 40 dollars in mint condition pre 64 nickels now i know they're not silver but can you IMAGINE IF THEY WERE! ugh :-\

Re: Some one please help me haha!

Yours are probably not proofs, or if they are, something weird is going on.

Re: Some one please help me haha!

well i must say. i may not have alot of experiece so far with coins but these coins are so reflective and have no marks on them it's odd to begin with. but the fact they were all in the same box also goes to say something...

i beleive something kinda wierd is going on. any ideas? ???

Re: Some one please help me haha!

Are the surfaces like mirrors? Can you post some close-ups?

Re: Some one please help me haha!

I'd bet that they are BU. It is not as likely that they are GEM Proof (I suppose stranger things have happened though).

I would be excited to find them and personally would rather keep them than sell them.

If you do want to sell them, your options are:
1) Craigslist - no fees, wide audience
2) Ebay - fees eat a bit of your margin
3) Local coin shop - might not offer over face for them unless they span many years with each mint mark
4) Tnet Classifieds (requires paid membership) http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/board,12.0.html

Nice find though. Do you have a final count of each date and each mint?

Re: Some one please help me haha!

final counts will be posted shortly if you guys will be up by tomorrow a the latest, i would say gem at least some are better then others but thats based on reflection only. my camera doesnt do close shots well. but for right now i have for one year (120) 1961 nickels. ( smallest of the piles)

No sorry to say they aren't anything special.

oh okay thank you organized my nickel finds from these last few weeks. when i get my camera up and running i hope to get them up see what you guys think

I'd definitely save those nice '59 - '63's. And it's good that they are mostly P's too because those have lower mintages than the D's - esp the '59P's. All the '59P-'62P's have mintages of 100m or less and the '59P has a low mintage of just 28,397,291 which is low for a nickel. And I'd sure save the '42 coin also - even if it's not silver it's worth saving (mintage 49,818,600).

Interesting finds. That's the way it goes with nickels and CRHing in general - you never know what you will find. I found 2 rolls of BU 2009 half dollars (1P & 1 D) just 2 days ago and they were still in their original US Mint blue and white wrappers. You can only get these coins directly from the US Mint (as we all know) and you have to pay a $15 premium for the 2 roll set - not that I ever would though.

Btw, there was no '69P nickel but it they are '69S - those have a mintage of just 123,099,631 which is relatively low for nickels.

HH

well then! i'll have to figure out what to do with them or where to store them in the process of moving. And I'll definately have to take a look at the 1969's again it was one of those freak boxes where you start in on the first few rolls and are like what the heck is goin on here
