I found this at my site dating to the 1830's i really have no idea, my two guesses would be a metallic trinket worn by a native American or maybe some sort of plate off of a gun its a thin plate about an inch long and wide, made of brass or copper the pattern is raised so i think it was stamped not carved but i doesn't look factory made

I also found this button I'm assuming there's not much to tell but on the off chance someone could tell me more about it ill post it. the button is about half the size of a dime

Ive heard that some Native Americans made copper jewelry and stuff like that out of copper traded from the white man. This could be something like that. Nice button too.

nhbenz that's perfect. That info falls perfectly in line with my other dated material. ive found another button stamped L and Kendrick, other things dating to the 1820's and 30's, at the site and even the story my grandpa tells of the Jackson peace medal found somewhere on the property a long time ago, unfortunately all he has is a rubbing because the medal was stolen

Would guess the one with the hole is a concho of some sort, use unknown, Jewelry or horse related

its about as thick as a small washer and weighs nearly nothing. it was also found smack in the middle of indian/trader site in indian country 1830's Kansas. not trying to be negative just clarifying i appreciate any insight because id really like to figure this one out. could be a major clue if it was an indian site of some traders in indian country. I'm prob 65/35 lean towards indian

A lot of fancy muskets had brass inlays in the stock similar to your piece, but yours is irregular shape and kind of roughly made from the looks of it, so I doubt it came off of a gun unless it was reworked afterward... having the hole punched with a square nail from the look of it says old to me, but I can't think of any way to put a date range on it

Hopefully it will turn up someday and you get to murder the dirtbag that stole it. I know I would.

haha hes probably long gone already this happened well before my time, it was my great grandpa who took it to the local courthouse to find out more about it probably some time in the 30's if i had to guess and the medal was conveniently "lost"... but it is a shame... i do wonder if its still floating around locally somewhere stashed in a box the family not knowing where it came from...

nola ken that's interesting info i suggest gun parts because ive found other parts up in that same spot but as you said its a bit crude. with the pattern being raised I'm guessing it was stamped but maybe the stamp itself was hand carved... some people around here claim there was a trading post about a half mile from this spot, the people that own that land deny it so who knows, but if there was one maybe they were making these "tokens" to trade? almost like printing their own money?

I think Pistol Pete got it on the square thing. They were used on saddlebags and packs. Good luck.

That's entirely possible, it would be really cool to find where that trading post was, I'd bet there's a lot to be found there.... If you ever do locate it, find the privy and dig it out. It's probably full of good bottles
