I'm sure it's worthless garbage, but I'm just curious what on earth this thing is:

It looks like the center rotates could you clean it up and take a pic?

It looks like a socket that a vacuum tube or a radio tube fit into. Maybe a component from an old radio or television set.

Thanks for the replies! The dirt is really hard-packed in there, and I ended up pulling out some small bits of glass when I tried cleaning it the first time, so I decided to stop until I get something better to pick at it in case that glass was actually part of the thing. I'll post updated pictures soon once I get a chance to clean it up nicer.

If you are pulling small bits of glass the socket for the glass vacuum tubes or radio tube seems like it might fit the items I.D.
