4 hours digging one hut out almost 4 feet deep and several feet wide... Doing WWE style moves on tree roots :BangHead:, digging melted lead after melted lead :BangHead:, digging nails and nails and more nails :mblah05: (almost as if freakin General Burnside had a nail factory in this hut) getting a good signal thinking ITS GOTTA BE A PLATE!!!! ends up being a bullet, getting another signal and thinking OH THIS IS A BANNER FIND nope just a silly willy Pajama button... Days like these make you wanna go rent a backhoe from SunBelt and just do it the easy way... Yah I found some stuff like 1 bullet, some iron C piece, some PJ buttons or whatever you wanna call them, 3 napsack rivets (which i got so mad i threw 2 of them down the hill) and one civilian button i found on the way back to the truck... Now I know why guys quit after awhile but whatever there is always tomorrow.. :occasion14:

Could be worse, you might have found those knapsack rivets again, on the way back down the hill. ;) LOL

Thanks for sharing that this hobby isn't always rosy.

Better luck next time.

HH!

I'd be happy with that considering my area lol

I think 70% of the time this hobby is not rosy, if you are out there doing it just for the shake of not finding any valuable relics but just too hunt & have a good time with friends or yourself then you would have a blast either way but when it comes too finding valuable artifacts or taking MDing a step further than just a hobby finding like coins, plates, gold, confederate buttons, etc really just can get frustrating when you go out hunting for a couple hours a day and not finding anything of value it can get really upsetting or when you hit a gold spot and end up digging it all up and it is all gone and you spend the next 2 years trying to find another similar spot with no results, and then dealing with people to try and get permission these days is like pulling teeth...

Well, it just goes to show that not every day you get out is going to be a major score. But, knowing your tenacity, you will post some nice finds.

Man your from Ohio?? you gottta research some ohio camps around there, years back in early 2000s I hit a spot near Ansted,WV that had a ohio camp and Ohio regiment artifacts are high dollar. I need to head up your way lol

What you're describing is what I've dealt with all of my life and am glad beyond words that I am now on the outside looking in. For lack of better words, you are describing what is known as "the rat race". Everyone trying to get a one-up on all the others so they can be the top rat. The one with the most. The most money, value, recognition.

I know it's not an exact comparison but if anyone is in this "hobby" as a professional and needs the money to pay bills. Well, that's a different colored horse. Like any "job", one needs to be sure of a payday. As I said, I'm glad I'm out of that end.

Although I'm not out there for riches nor acclaim, this thing we do is more than a "hobby" to me. It is a lifestyle. The research, the gathering permissions, keeping equipment up and running AND the hunting are all part of what makes up my life nowadays. Not to mention the work in cleaning/preserving/identifying and creating posts to share the "fun" with my friends here.

No, it's not just a hobby, it's a passion. If I needed to do it for a living, I'd drop it in a New York second. (In fact, I did. But, that's another story for another time.)

I completely understand your getting frustrated enough to throw away those annoying rivets, especially when you were trying sooooooo hard to find something "good". Kind of feels like being mad at the target for not being what we want it to be. ;) This entire hobby is, in a word, frustrating!!! It's how we deal with that frustration that makes or breaks our mood. I've learned that if I'm getting upset while hunting, for whatever reason, it's better for me to quit for the day then to put my knife through the middle of that 20 dollar gold piece. :)

This is not just directed at you H.S.D. but rather to try and put this whole "hobby" in perspective to those who are frustrated. The hobby itself turns on the feeling, don't expect it to ever go completely away.

Best of luck in all your future searches.

HH!

You remember the exact spot lol I'm just on the border of WV.

I sent you a PM JmCraz.. Normally I would charge (no joke) someone $200 for the exact location but I will give you details ;)

No offense, but the relics are not about finding something of $ value or not. I spend plenty of hours out and get skunked, but work up enough spots over time that I at least have a fall back spot. Pit digging is always a crap shoot, spend all day digging big holes without knowing if they will pay off or not, but hey, they have to be dug. Hit a enough and you will be rewarded I am sure.

Those rivets you threw away tell a story, if they were found in a hut that is like throwing history away man. I know you were frustrated, but we can't give ammunition to those out there who think we are irresponsible with history, too many eyes upon us these days. We have to be good stewards of what we find even if they are just rivets.

Not meant to be a lecture, but just making a point. I will be the first to admit, I have been guilty of getting frustrated and throwing an item back in the hole a time or two as well.
