Someone know what this is?

Howdy all,
I don't often find a stumper, but I did today. I dug this in a field that predates the Civil War era, and dates all the way back to Hudson Bay Co. It is roughly 1" x .75" in dimension. My first guess was a part of a rifle sling. The field has kicked loose well over 100 3 ringers for me and yesterday my first eagle button. I'm not sure of the use or date of this item so any help is appreciated. It has a real ornate engraving which I tried to get a closeup of. Thanks in advance.

I'd guess it's horse leather related. A buckle shield is what it made me thing of, so maybe that sent me on the wrong path, but we'll see.

I have fossils of trilobites and brachiopods in my yard that shows my field predates 300 million years ago. In fact, some of the rocks nearby in the Catskills are billions of years old. ALL fields predate the Civil War.
