Someone tell me what this is!

I found this in my front yard and put it in my bag and disregarded it as a washer. Later while looking over my findings I noticed the design on one side and the letters on the other. It was completely caked with rust/metal so I took it to the machine shop I'm working at and had my buddy sandblast it a little bit and it worked great. The date says 1872 and I can make out PATH or PATN but not the letters in the middle. Any suggestions?

And the date looks like1892 in the picture but in person it looks like 1872 it's hard to tell but everyone I've showed it to sees 1872
