Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I found this while metal detecting at a new spot this weekend. I've found a 1865 Indian head, standing liberty quarter, and other things ranging from the 1860s till today but I have no clue what this is or how old it might be. At first i thought it was a doorknob or possibly a decanter top. Any ideas on its use and age would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

I believe it may be a decanter top with the seal gone. Just a definite maybe, not an expert by a long shot. Congrats, great find.

My son actually thought it could be an inkwell also but the groove on the neck makes me think there was something else attached to it.

Looks like an inkwell to me.

The hex handle looks concave. If so, I doubt it's an inkwell. More likely a booze decanter top. You could use the top as a shot glass.

Defiantly a decanter top.
They had a pliable plastic "cork" that sealed the bottle.
Your top is missing the plastic part.

Similar to this...

Thanks everyone for the replies. I agree with it being a decanter top.

I still say inkwell..... so I give you the rarely used protest icon.:tongue3:

But, if it is a decanter top, it’s still pretty cool.....

If it is an ink well, it sure won't hold much ink! Just the neck is all. Threading a fountain pen inside that small opening wouldn't be all that quick and easy either. A quill wouldn't be all that bad I guess......
