Thought this might be fun to show what can happen to very ancient things in the ground. These are very old,can you tell what happened? These all were found on the surface at waters edge at diff times.. They are bone. Deer bone I guess ?

Incised bone.looks like someone drew a pattern.Does not look like fleshing out marks or eating scrapes? What do you all think?
Hope you enjoy some diffrent ancient artifacts found.

I've found quite a few bones in creeks & rivers with "gnaw" marks on them my father in law who does quite a bit of hunting says small animals use them like raw hides to chew on.
That last pic looks like it's not random though, like a pattern! Someone also told me that sometimes the marks are from when they used them as tools of some sort?

or a porkypine

That last one isn't chewed. It looks like an artifact.

Look like critters have been gnawing on them, except for the last one. ???

I agree...Looks like designes on that one.

didnt they use bones to make points, thanks for showing richard and go get some of them points so i do not have to come across that mountain to see whats over there lol jamey

You guys are all correct. I thought it looked like beavers or maybe muskrats. What gets me is that they were chewed when they were still fresh for the minerals. Still fresh had to be hundreds maybe a thousand years ago. I still wonder about the third picture though.
Looks like someone had a flint knife and was playing with their food !
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have some bone tools with those gnaw marks on them. I also have some heavly gnawed bone pieces that are old. I imagine their cache and refuge pits were great homes for critters. Might be why you see so much of that. Iowa soil seems to preserve bone pretty good, but once it hits the creek or river it doesn't last long. Good post, thanks!

You are welcome bean man. I thought they were interesting enough to lug home.

Not an expert but I really beleive that they are not knaw marks. I have some bone pieces similar to the one you have, and mine are clearly polished over the "marks". I truely believe that they are artifacts! jmo

I think the first two may be knawed (sp?). The third to me...looks like the meat was cut away from the bone then the anciend guy kinda made a few patterns with his knife ???
