Valve Stem

An engine valve true enough, and it is burned due to some foreign object falling into the cylinder head perhaps a screw. Notice the holes on the face. JIM

From the size and burning, it is an exhaust valve. The holes in the face are there intentionally for whatever reason, they are perfectly aligned on center. And engine vavles are extremely hard material that does not get indented easily. They are possibly to help index the valves at the correct angle for assembly considering the hole at the other end for the spring retainer lock. Nowdays, they are held in with keepers that do not require a specific angle to assemble them, this one obviously does.

Sorry Jimmileo, didn't want it to sound like I thought you were wrong, just sharing what I know. Motorheads tend to be detail nuts.

And I didn't mean it that way! After rechecking the holes I agree with you! JIM

it looks like an exhaust from a very old engine, the holes are used to turn the valve back and forth when lapping in the valve while in the engine, using an abasive in grease.
