Sometimes, metal detecting isn't always about the relic, but about the story that the relic tells. This is an 1860's era, perfectly flattened Spencer rifle 56-56 caliber rimfire shell casing. I dug this today at a depth of 4 inches with my Minelab Equinox 600 on what used to be the Virginia and Truckee RR's 1880's rail line as it passes through the canyons Northeast of old Washoe City. If you've ever put a coin on the rails as a kid before the train passes, you know exactly what that looks like. I can just imagine some kids placing this shell casing on the rail as the V&T engine transported passengers and silver from Carson City to Reno...150 years ago!
