I know nothing about american civil war relics i just started. I found this metal detecting in a civil war site area. what is this? If its a fuse what type because ive never seen this type exploded ever. Is it practice? or battle american civil war relic. How old could it possibly be? Also how do i clean the dirt off without cleaning of the nice patina how do i clean it the correct way without ruining it. also hard dirt dirt. Is it a confederate or union slash yankee lol. 20210412_224830.webp20210412_224828.webp20210412_224821.webp20210412_224814.webp

Your find is one of the several versions of a zinc US Parrott artillery shell's timefuze adapter-plug. The length of the version you found tells us it was made for use in a Heavy Caliber (4.2"-caliber or larger) cylindrical shell. Heavy Caliber means the cannon was literally too heavy for the army to haul around in combat operations, and therefore Heavy artillery was used mainly in permanent forts and on navy warships.
