Specifically what does it mean when people tell you to listen to the "whispers" or faint signals. On my DFX it seems like there are either sounds or there aren't. I can't really differentiate between the signals as being whispers. I have quality headphones so I don't think that's a problem.

One thing i noticed is that if you have a broken sound the VDI goes back and forth between 95 and say 75 over and over, it's usually a deep coin. When this happens, I dig a shallow plug and swing the coil again. Usually the signal calms down at a steady 75.

any other tricks?

sorry, I just found a thread that answers all my questions very well.

Those "whispers" are just weak signals that you might barely hear. They will not sound like a full tone. Also perhaps you don't have any very deep signals to whisper to you.

I had to laugh at the phrase, "Like there are either sounds or there arent." One of the members of our group keeps finding the deepest tiny pieces of gold with her Tiger Shark. She describes it as, "It's almost a sound." Now, what the heck does that mean I used to think.

That bouncing of the VDI meter like you said sometimes calms down after you remove a plug. Other times it is a piece of junk near the coin or even a broken ring.
