Hello to all my friends, as some of you already know, I went on a hunting trip last week, started off on Sunday the 27th Jan 2009, I went down to Jeffreys Bay for the night to break my trip, I did some hunting on the main beach down there and found more money where the colourds and blacks swim than where the whites were swimming, I must admit that I did come across this guy who lives in Port Elizabeth Conilias (sp) and his daughter who both had machines, the guy made me laugh, he was dragging a huge magnet behind him that was attached to a thin rope to his belt, he told me that he collects coins and stuff like this as well, anyway he did say that between his daughter and himself they had collected round about R300. the past week. Anyway I was very freightened that night, I slept at some back packers place and I ended up having to sleep in the same room as two beautiful Dutch ladies, they were from Holland and I was scared that they might end up raping me knowing that they must be thinking how handsome this South African guy is, thus did not get much sleep.

Thus the next morning I left for Siedgefield to visit a friend who has an antique shop down there next to The ENGEN garage, his name is Andrew, had some breakfast with him and we chatted most of the morning, I then left and drove back to Plettenberg Bay, sorted out my accommodation at another Back Packers place and then went down to the beach for the afternoon, this is when I found two R5. coins and this old brass nail, I also found some roller from a trailer from a fishing boat as well as a few other coins, but I must admit that I had been experiencing (and I still am) excessive pain in my right knee, since the day before Christmas thus I was not in the mood to search for very long and to make matters worse, when I got back to the place where I was spending the night, I was told that there is a huge water shortage and that there is not much water to wash my machines and gear, anyway I ended up sleeping in another dorm with 10 other odd people, must admit that there was a very beautiful German lady above me but this sort of accommodation is not for an old guy like me.

Anyway the next morning I was again on my way, by passed Jeffreys Bay and then all the other places that I was going to stay at as well, just carried straight on to East London, (my old 1994 Golf car air cleaner had come adrift from the carb, it is held in place by a threaded bolt and thus I basically just drove the car without an air cleaner, but because it was tar driving it was no big problem, the car was no ideling very well thus I just turned up the idler screw.

Anyway the first night in East London I stayed at a friends hotel in Gonubie called The Blue Water Hotel, I then visited the beach that is mostly used in this area, but did not find much, even with it been Spring Tides, thus the next day I went and stayed at my Mothers house in Beacon Bay for the next few days, I then hunted this other beach with another mate of mine called Gary, he used a Fisher machine, he has been hunting this beach for many many years, well over the next few days, this is where I found all of the goodies in the following pic's, my wife has just counted up the silver coins consisting of R1, R2, R5, coins which came to
R492.00 then there were also a huge amount of what we call copper coins consisting of 5c. 10c, 20c, and 20c coins, they amounted to R49.10

Now I must admit that with using my brand new Excalibur 1000 Minelab machine I used it mainly on Pin Point mode, I did try and use it on DISC but it gave me this funny buzzing noise, I did have a chat with Wolfgang about this and he said that it does do this in this mode, but I decided to rather just use it in PIN POINT mode instead, because when usining it in DISC, and the buzzing noise comes, it takes a while to go back to the other feint noise that we normally use and then this is a waste of time and also searching a particular area while waiting for it to go back is confusing to me, sometimes I did try and put it back to pin point and then DISC, sometimes this worked and then it did not make any difference, I even put the metal spade next to the coil, this also sometimes worked.

Anyway I must admit that this machine is much better than my friends 15 year old Fisher machine, there was this other guy down there as well who had a Garret, some green looking machine and I followed behind them with my Excalibur 1000 where they had searched and I dug many holes behind them, this really confused them, shame poor guys their machines just did not penetrate the ground deep enough, must be the BBS tecnology that my machine has compared to their single and duel system of their machines.

Both Gary and Brian were getting upset with me, they told me that I was poaching on their beach, but at the end of the day, Gary was a very happy friend indeed, while searching, I came across these two outer gold rings, he actually found the main engagemnet ring, thus I swopped the two outer rings with him so that he would then have the complete set, I also found some gold earings as well as what you can see in the following pic's, still with a sore knee but a few pain killers helped me along as well and also walking in the shallow waves the cold helped as well.

The one day I had a few black chaps dragging along as well, they ended up helping me to dig, in return I gave them R30. that we also found on the beach while digging, these two guys were very very happy as well.

Africa, i can't get those two Dutch girls off my mind, did you say something
about doing some detecting?

Nothing like South African Gold!

Congrats on the nice finds and thanks for an enjoyable read. I also just got me an Excalibur which due to the cold up here in the north I only have tried once now (without much success so far). The buzzing treshold sound in disc mode is really annoying but I'm sure once I understand the machine well I might learn how to properly use it. There is lots of good information here on the forum and I just ordered Clive J. Clynicks book to be well prepared once the ground and beaches start thawing. I can't wait. Thanks for your inspiring post.

Yeah this is why I just prefer to just use Pin Point instead, let me know what you find out the best way to stop this from happening.
Thankyou to everybody for your comments so far. :icon_thumright:
