Ridley and I headed back to an area that we detected at last weekend near the CW Bentonville Battlefield. As mentioned in his post, we met a lot of great friendly folks, and were shows more places that we could detect. We hit private properties, an old store, a 1600's-1800's road, and an elementary school all within a few mile mile radius. The city parks were off limits to metal detecting as you can read on the one sign, as there are so many people in that area looking for CW relics.
Our day consisted of about 50% hunting, and 50% meeting folks and touring the area.
Ridley gave MDing lessons to a few kids (Pete & Chris- digging by the Oak tree)), and I think they may now be hooked too. ;D
As we drove by a cotton field full of farm workers, we stopped and recruited the digging help of an Amigo named Pedro Alvarez Castillo Ortega, or "PACO" for short. He is pictured holding Ridley's Minelab and a Peso.
It's amazing how well that Minelab also doubled as a shovel! :o
It was a fun and informative day, although no wilvers were dug up. ;D
My finds were:

* An old 1800's button that I found along the old road. I think it says " Massachusetts" plus more on the back. It is a 20mm flat button. I posted it in the "what is it" section too.
Any ideas on this one?

*An old buckle and some pottery shards.
Any idea on this buckle?

*Clad coins from an elementary school, including a SAC Dollar! I'll be hitting this school again later, as it is FULL of finds.

* A dime that someone shot. A very good shot I may add. :o

I'll try to stop at the Bentonville Battlefield next time and post some pictures for all to see. I was told there is a museum of CW finds there, and an old CW hospital.

Thanks for looking & have a great week,
MM

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

Great post and finds MM, I had a good laugh at some of the pics! HH, Mike

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

How long did it take you to dig that tree up? I see you digging by hand, is that before you found out how good a shovel the Minelab made? SUPER FINDS! Great pics too.

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

looking at that glass, pottery and button you found, I would say skip the school and stay where that stuff is coming from. go slow, and dig iffy signals.

Thanks. I think you're right. I was trying to set my sights on deep silver, and pretty much ignored the iffy ones this last trip. We had so much ground to cover, I had to move pretty quickly. We are planning to go back this w/end again.
Have a great week,
MM

Green,
It threw me for a loop too. That's the first one I've ever seen myself.

Most of the sign's I see have the "no tectin" phrase at the bottom,by the time you read the other 12 line's before that it's too late...Cool find's and good luck at the new propertie's!HH!!

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

My lord...You guys really use shovels like that?? That thing is like a baby backhoe........How deep was the tree?

Nice pix....cool finds.....get a smaller shovel....that one will not fit in a pocket.

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

I'M starting to see more and more of the no detecting signs in all the local parks her in middle tennessee too. I have to get a metal detecting id from TVA POLICE to hunt in the lake campgrounds and swimming beaches now along most of the lakes also the TWRA requires one and so does the army corp of engineers its getting harder and harder to find public places to hunt just my 2 cents worth on the signs good finds too

Re: Southern Relics Roadshow

Cool button. Surprised you didn't come home with more goodies.

Who's using the big shovel? We can't carry any of those around 90% of the places we detect. People get up in arms that we are destroying the property. ;D

Bob,
The kid you see with the large backhoe shovel is Pete and his buddy Chris.
This is Pete's families property that we are detecting on. They are the ones that gave us permission to hunt their property, so I don't care if he uses dynamite to find his target. ;D
Ridley located a "silver" signal with his new Minelab in the roots of this large oak. After about 15 minutes of digging with a small digger, and still not finding it, they resorted to the beast you see in the picture. Here's the funny part....using the Vibra Probe they finally dug something out of the hole. An old rusty nail!!! It gets worse....the "silver" signal they thought they were digging is still actually buried in the oak roots at ground level. Basically the signal is IN the root itself now. When Ridley and I were leaving I heard the two boys talking about pulling the tree down with their 4X4 or using a chain saw. :o :o :o
*No animals were hurt making this post*

As far as more finds, I think we spent way to much time socializing this trip. It's good PR though.
Have a good week,
MM

Thanks to a referral by PBK, I contacted button expert Warren Tice earlier this week on the Massachu button I dug last weekend (pictured).
I'm very excited that he was able to ID it for me. This is why I like finding old buttons. There is so much history with them.
Here's what Warren had to say:
Hi Doug: Thanks for writing about that button. I believe that the backmark is in two concentric rings. The outer ring, which is a shallow impression, should read "STRONG FOREVER." The inner ring, which is strongly raised and shown in your photo, reads "OLD MASSACHUSETTS." The button was a political campaign token for Caleb Strong (1745-1819) who served two terms as governor of Massachusetts. The button probably dates ca. 1810-1819. Strong was an opponent of the War of 1812 and refused to send the state militia to the army. Look hard for the "STRONG FOREVER" inscription after cleaning the button. Hope this helps. Regards, Warren Tice

Thanks PBK!

HH everyone,
MM
