Sure you can get the coil wet and even submerge it. Over lap an inch or two and sweep at a steady slow speed. In other words, don't Whip it. Make sure your Sov will sound off on a pull tab and good luck. When you find a ring, slip it away like it was junk and save looking at it till later when your back in the car. You never know who is watching you.

Good Luck and enjoy the sun. Try not to fall on the babes.............. ;D

I think you should remove the meter. Dig all positive signals.

You will learn what rusty bottle caps sound like. You will also learn what buried cans sound like especially when pin-pointing.

And if you run it with a threshold, be sure to re-check some of the 'nulls' as they may be deeep good targets. Just try to scrape some of the top layer of sand and recheck, if the tone changes, it might be a good target.

Good luck and don't drop you machine in the water. Hope you have a good sand scoop.

Sandman is one of the masters of beach hunting so I follow his advice like it was written in the sand.

If your using a meter, if it was my unit, I would leave it in the car . I don't know your beach area so it may not be a problem up there but down here the breeze blows a damp salt mist from the surf, excessive exposure to it could cause corrison on the meter.

Now then again, I may be all "wet" (pun intended) and not have clue to what I'm talking about as far as the meter goes. I'm using an Excal, but I am also ordering a GT with the WOT coil as soon as thinks have calm down for TonyinCT.

I know when I go home, even if I have not set a toe in the water, I and my Excal is covered in a salt mist many times. I want run the Sov with out the cover on the East Coast beaches here, West Coast beaches would be different here as there is no surf.

Good luck and let us know how you do.....

Thanks everyone.

I will take the meter and probe off before hitting the beach. I had forgotten about salt spray. I know after just a couple hours, my sunglasses get covered in it.

Really, it sounds no different than how I hunt now on land. My setup sounds off on all pull tabs and I dig them all in search of my first gold ring. I learned real quick when I bought my Sov that it likes it slow and steady. I have become addicted to my Sunray probe, but pinpointing should not be a problem if I grab a sand scoop I guess.

As for the finds, I have read many of the posts in the beach hunting section and have gotten some good advice there (and Sandman really should write a book - I would buy one ;D)

Thanks again everyone!

If you havent read the section on beach hunting on the goldenolde I would read it. You will want a good beach scoop, the bigger the better. It makes it a lot easier as the holes tend to fill in quickly when you take hits where the water is still washing over them. Even a few inches of water washes in sand quickly.

The golden oldie site is where the most info on beach hunting is located. I printed the whole thing for reference. I do not get out to water hunt as much as I'd like.

Just wanted to update on my first beach trip with my Sov. Only got to hunt night, but had a great time. And for everyone who thinks sand diggers have it easier than sod buster - they have never swung in the surf... Besides a blue million pull tabs and beer caps, I got a bunch of clad and my first sterling silver ring (pics to be added later). The Sov was very impressive in the wet sand and shallow surf as I got the ring I found at over 10". As a matter of fact, most all my finds were at least 5" or greater. I guess some of the other machines on the beach were scooping up the shallow targets. I never really hunted the dry sand, so I know I left a bunch of stuff for everyone else, I just tried to plan my hunt around low tide after the beach was vacant of people and after a a day of gully washing thunderstorms.

As for my advice to anyone who is planning their first MDing trip to the beach, buy a good sand scoop. Mine did not get to me in time before I left and I could not find one anywhere around Myrtle Beach... My son's fingers will be raw for weeks ;) but we both had a great time.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Congrats on the ring find. I know what you mean by the surf. When I am out in it with my Excal, I just keep saying to myself, "drowning is not an option".

I just got a new Sov GT to go with my Excal and hunted with it this weekend as well. You should consider one for yours. You can cover so much more area, (15 inches vs may 6 inches on stock coil) you don't have to overlap the pattern, it goes d-e-e-p, and it pinpoints great.

I have been considering a WOT, I just have to find a way to sneak it under the wife's nose, although it may be easier now that she is wearing the ring I found and a sterling silver toe ring I forgot to mention (I eyeballed the toe ring). She considered MDing a waste of money, but now that it is bearing a little fruit for her - other than getting me out of her hair - she may be open to letting me spend some more money on my rig.

Tell her it would really help in finding that diamond ring that you just know is waiting for you to find and give her. Show her some of the diamond rings posted on this website and say "see like that one" ;D

Unfortunately, my beach hunting is limited to once, maybe twice a year if I am lucky. I am about 7 hours from the beach. Although you have a chance of finding jewelry anywhere people gather, it seems the beach provides if best opportunity due to large crowds of people turning themselves to prunes soaking in the water - and from what I observed during the day when I was soaking up the sun, many of the women do not leave their jewelry at home or locked up some where. They have fingers full of gold and silver digging away in the sand and splashing in the ocean. Most of the sites I tend to hunt are older sites around the house and do not offer that large of opportunity.

I figure the best way is the same way I got my detector and everything else on it - It easier to ask forgiveness than permission and then you only have to do it if she is the one that signs for the UPS package ;D

Thats what PO boxes and and office addresses are for......
