Hi
Have someone of you Sov GT users ever used a Shadow x5 ??
I would like to hear your opinion to this machine, compared to a Sov GT, as in
sensitivity, depht, disc, and other differences.
The x5 works at 19 khz, and it is very sensitive to small targets, but I can`t use it in the salt
water and wet salty sand. This is my first detector, and I like it a lot.But because of it`s bad
performance at the saltwater beach, I have now purchased a new Sov GT.
I have also heard that the x5 is about the same machine as the Tesoro Cortez, and the only difference
is that the Cortez works at 10khz and has a display.
Anyone who know something about this ??

Thanks in advance, :) Roald Mollerop, Norway.

Yes Tesoro made the Troy line of detectors for Troy. I was very disappointed in the shadow X5 and did not take long to get rid of it! Yes it is very similar to the Tesoro line of detectors chatter all the time. Bill

The only Troy made by Tesoro was the X2, Fisher made the X3 and X5 I hunt in high mineral areas on the west coast and mine has no problem with conditions on salt water beaches. The Sov is a great machine though I would get the Troy checked out for problems. The machines built by Tesoro and Fisher for Troy were designed by Troy Galloway. Dan

You are right with the chattering Bill, especially in the beginning,it was very confusing.
But after some times of using it, I began to get used to the chattering, and was able to sort out the good
signals.Because when I hit a good target, the x5 produced a clear and loud signal.Almost every time.
It depends how deep it is.
But, as I said before, the x5 is my first Detector, and I have nothing to compare with.I am new in this hobby,
and because of this time of the year,I have not tested out my new Sov GT yet.
When it comes to the salt water beach, the x5 performs very good in the dry sand, but not in the water and the wet sand. And I have read in several forums that other people also have problems with the x5 in the salt water, but some
don`t. I don`t know why. Do you.??
Thanks to all of you, for your help :). Roald. ;D

for beach hunting,i think if you buy the S12 coil for the Sovereign GT you will leave all your other detectors at home after you see how it performs ! i know i do!

The main reason some have falsing with one detector at a saltwater beach shoreline and another hunter using the same detector at another location has to do with the different amounts of black sand present and maybe also the concentration of salt, but I think this is very little.

The Sov GT is unlike most other VLF detectors in it's operation in wet saltwater sand.

I had an X5 I used on the beaches here in NJ. When in the wet sand, I had to run it in beach discrim and fixed GB to get it stable. Also, I had to turn the discrim up to cancel out the salt. I used both the 9 inch round and the DD and it chattered a lot in the wet sand...and hit the hot rocks pretty bad.

In the dry sand it's killer. It hits hard on aluminum though. But...I found gold rings and chains with it. Sometimes I wish I still had it since it was nice and light, built well and water resistant.

What are you talking about the X5 rocks.... I will put my X5 up against any explorer se pro or any other all around detector anytime.... with its beach discrimination mode and its beach sand ground balance plus the fact that its frequency shift and and target make it ROCK at the beach....

as for iron discrimination.... iron is on the entire frequency band of any detector depending on the amount... you can discriminate out nails and things but no matter what you cant discriminate out massive chunks of steel or cannon balls and if you tried you would end up having to disc out gold, coins and other valuables...

where some of these people have had some chattering in the wet and dry sand traverses is where the FREQ shift switch comes in handy to settle it down and it works perfectly.... you can most of the time leave your settings alone and JUST use FREQ shift on the beach

the X5 is my all around detector and my back up detector when i take my GPX 4500 out for walks in the gold country

With my Excal or GT i dont have to worry about Iron.i run my discriminate on 0 and still null out Iron and get small Gold..

X5 is also great under powerlines and around electric fences where alot of detectors falter.

yes .... i found this out the other day.... the FREQ shift switch works wonders and around other MD's
