I just got my first detector, a Sovereign GT. With it came a nimh battery and charger. I looked all through the manual and did not see any mention of time for the "first charge". The manual does not mention anything about the first charge, just that a completely flat battery will take 12-14 hours to charge. On many other electronic devices I have seen a statement something like. "Charge the battery for 18 hours before initial use. For subsequent charging use 10-12 hours." Is there a different recommended time for the first charge? Should I just wait for green light on the battery to dim (page 11 of the manual), or should I just go ahead and charge it 12-14 hours the "first time"?

Also, does the minelab charger (AC Adaper product number: 0302-0016) have protection against overcharging, or do I need to keep track of the time?

I have a Sovereign GT as well. I give it an over night charge before I go hunting which unually ends up being 14-16 hours by the time I get done, not planned that way just turns out that way.

I haven't really noticed the green lit going out or dim for that matter, but could just be my eyes. I know after an over nightl charge i give out a long time before it does. I usually hunt about 5-6 hours at the beach.

I have been thinking about getting the Energizer rechargeable batterys (2500 nimh) and trying them in the battery pod to see how long they last.

Your initial charge for the NIMH pak should be 12 to 14 hours. It won't hurt it to over charge, thou I wouldn't leave it on there for days. It is hard to tell when the battery is low and you can just leave it on to run it down to get an extimate how long it lasts. It will last longer when using headphones and the more targets the shorter charge too. But either way, you will get tired before the battery runs out.

good luck,

I went out with my GTthe other day, knowing that a recharge was due any time. My detector started giving tons of annoying signals at one point and I just had to quit, time for recharge, which solved the problem. I guess when your GT starts going crazy with false signals, the batts need recharge. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have. I also always carry the AA batterypack as back up.

If I'm headed to the beach I always recharge, even though I may only have 5 or 6 hours on the battery from last charge. Ever so often I will leave the unit on and run the battery down then recharge it, but that is not often.

All i use is AA battery pack with my...Sovereign... never did like the rechargeable batterys...........But when i did use them i would give them about 18 hours on first charge...................==Jim==
