Detector(s) used
Minelab X-Terra Pro.
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
I am a X-Terra 70 owner and would not part with it but, now that I do have the interest of my wife I was thinking of picking up a Sovereign, mostly due to the fact of references I see here and also cause it ain't got a darn display. Now many here might say, well just do not look at the display on your 70. Well''' I just couldn't do that and I'm sure many couldn't either. Even if it was just out of the corner of my eye. I would love a unit where I could concentrate on the sounds. My only question, with these sounds the Sovereign gives, is there anyway to determine the depth of the object? Thanks, Joe

not at first.

but after using it long enough,
digging many objects, you can guestimate depth.

but size of objects can still confuse the ears,
throwing off some guesses

The more you use it the more you can see its abilities to tell the depth of the target by sound.

I really love my Sov GT (Thanks TonyinCT) it is a great machine, goes deep with the WOT, it is a breeze to pinpoint with and has really sweet tones.

I know it's not scientific, and I am probably the 1000Th person to discover this but I have never seen it posted so here you go.

I primarily hunt beaches with the WOT it has coil cover, and this would apply mainly on sand, dirt and soft grass.

The WOT coil has a single cross strut piece in the center, I pinpoint one direction when I have center of target, I place it on the ground and slide the coil forward and backward on the sand making about a 14 inch vertical line,(width of cross strut on the 15 inch coil) move 90 degrees and pinpoint again doing the same thing. I now have an X on the ground, so far every single time "X" has marked the spot of the treasure. ;)

You will learn how to guess about how deep to dig you will have no problem it is hit and miss but it will not take long..I have used just about every detector out there and in my mind THERE IS NOT A BETTER DETECTOR THAN THE >>>SOVEREIGN<<< to me it is better than the EXPLORER.The first time i used it i took it to a park i worked all the time and every one and thier brother worked and went home with a pouch full of coins.......LOVE LOVE THE SOVEREIGN........... I have used the top of the line..Garrett..White..and yes ..The explorer...My second choice for a detector is..TESORO.........................

As Jeff says, not at first. With experience you can judge the depth by the volume or the tone. Some just raise the coil after pinpointing to get a feeling by how far the coil is off the ground. I've done this with the Excal and find it isn't really necessary as if it beeps I'll dig it anyway no matter what depth it is at.

Thanks all, I did allot of looking around when I purchased my X-70 and the Sovereing really interested me but, then I thought, how can you do it with out a display....
I find that I do get more info from my 70 listening and I am convincing myself that "sound" is the way to hunt.......although the display is nice for things, I'm learning on what to dig due to listening and not the #'s that flash on the screen. You all gave me food for thought, Thanks again, Joe

I recently switched to a sovereign and dont miss the LCD at all.

I have a GT. It was my first detector and I thought I had to have a meter. The meter helped me with coins but it also became a crutch. The audio became nothing more than a signal to look at the meter. I took the meter off and am using it now with audio only. It is much better this way. The notch on the Sovereign is very good if you are in a lot of pulltabs or something. The Sovereign seem's to really love bottlecaps though. All detectors love square nails.

I'm new to the GT but not new to detecting (40+ years).

I thought I found the best machine in the world when I discovered the Tejon. The Sovereign is light years ahead of it. While the Tejon is very good, the GT is so good it's even fun digging clad! The pitch of the signal tones is so awesome and consistant that digging most anything is enjoyable.

My days of a single tone machine are gone. The multi-frequency, multi-tone pitch, and notch features are supreme.

As for depth, well, I'm new at this machine and so far I'm having a little problem in that area. Last night I dug a nickel at 7-9 inches that sounded like one about 4 inches deep on other machines. These GT's are deep. Very deep.

I have noticed that smaller coins like indian cents are a little softer than shallow wheats. I hunt a site where they pile snow removed from surrounding areas and with the snow comes a lot of dirt. They have been doing this here for about 70 years. Memorial cents dated 1970's can be 6+ inches deep and indian cents 10+. However, I have no problem detecting any of them with the Sovereign GT and 10" Tornado coil. The problem comes in the digging (rocks, glass, wire, etc.). It would be great having a depth meter.

Does that GT signal meter read the depth well?

while looking the Sovereign over I noticed the meter but, then this is what I am trying to get away from. Some will ask why and like mentioned above, its seems like a crutch and can confuse me more than not.
I have started to not watch my meter on the X-70, trust me that's hard, and while in 4 tone learning more of the sounds.
Maybe I will venture the 99 tone setting soon and see where that takes me.
The X-70 also has trouble with bottle caps, they sound so good and meter well also..

The GT comes with or without the meter. Just get one minus meter.

What I'm wondering about is the accuracy of the meter as far as depth goes?

I've owned lots of ID meter machines since they started making them in the 80's and they're all misleading and cause people to miss lots of good things. The depth feature is the only good thing about them as far as I'm concerned.

If somebody out there has had experience with the GT's meter, let us know.

Thanks

I haven't seen depth scale on the meters for the Sov GT, just a digital number display, tuned to 180 for a quarter.

On targets the first couple of inches the Sov will make it sound like its on the surface but as depth increases on targets, the volume drops out just like on most machines.
I use an Xterra 70 also, those are my two machines the Sov and the 70. They are both excellent hunters.
The meter on the Sov is very accurate, its probably the most accurate at depth Ive ever used. I think thats one of the benefits of the multi freq machines.
