My father passed away a few months ago, he used to be into the hidden gold in Utah stuff. Found a pic of this tree in his stuff and was curious of it's significance.

My condolences about your father I know what its like to just have all that information gone, so many questions un answered. I hate tree carvings, but I am going to say it is a trail marker for a royal mine.

Any idea how old the picture is? The mark on the tree looks pretty fresh, the symbology is Spanish but the bark on the tree is not even bumpy , if the cutouts would be old they would have look like swollen wound but that looks like a fresh cut. Maybe your Dad tried to make his own marker?
