Hunted a field next to my in laws. I have found flat buttons of various age in one part of the field in the past but not much else. Found some more buttons and the tiny buckle in that area. Tried a new area this time closer to the road on the highest ground in the field. Iron everywhere:headbang: Found a flat button, watch winder, and a plated ring marked 18:BangHead:. I really thought I had a seated on that signal since I had already found a 1881 IHP, shield nickel, and three fatties. 1862, 1863, and the other looks like a Flying eagle but its the most toasted one Ive found. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas

Really nice finds! I'm too lazy to dig those 12 - 12, 13 signals. Have enough problems with those 12 - 43 squeaker's bottle caps deep. I gamble, when I get a copper a tooth pick / brush can't help me identify. I figure it doesn't do me much good displaying it. So I'll put in in with the other clad in the rock tumbler with plastic aquarium rock. Seems it's 50 -50, sometimes after a few hours tumbling they come out great, half the time I just wasted my time as their true condition appears.

Ive got a mason jar full of indians, buffalos, Vs and shield nickels. Mostly toasted and worthless but still fun to find cuz I know Im in the right area for some nice relics and old silver/gold. I leave nothing in the ground most everywhere I hunt. I usually avoid sites full of modern trash and pity those who chose to hunt in it

If it's a very old site where a picnic area / pavilion stood, the more trash the merrier! I've had some of my best luck picking my way through that trash with a 5" little coil. Most people avoid those heavy trash areas like the plague. I can only take it for a couple of hours because it's like a bad song embedded in your brain that's tough to get rid of... Generally I've found the silver coins not as deep in those exceptionally trashy areas. I suspect because there's normally tree roots close to those areas, and the foot traffic from all those people compacting and hardening the soil in that area?
