Was down by the river with the wife and the boy, doing a little beach combing. The water levels around these parts are exceptionally low this year, and we've pulled loads of goodies. Just the other day I got this nice candlestick (busted), a little over 200g of solid silver. Well today wasn't too bad either. We were checking out a new area not too far from an archeological site. Got a couple of milk bottles (Guaranteed milk from Montreal) and some great nature pics. What my son pulled from the river's edge (keep in mind the river's at record lows) was pretty interesting - a wooden spike. Now even if it's now super old (although it has been sitting at the bottom of the river) I was wondering if anybody might have an idea of how to preserve it. The core is still wet and humid but it is starting to dry. I know as it starts to dry up more it's going to become more and more brittle...any suggestions?

wax,
I worked at a saw mill at one time, and in the summer they would wax all the birds eye maple logs that were going to japan to help keep from staining.hope that helps, rock on.

Wax.............Killer finds ..............HH

Leave it covered in water while you research the best way to preserve it. I think you have to let wood dry out slowly or it will totally disintegrate.

Thanks all.
It's been dried out and appears to have survived :hello2:
