Spike?

I have found several of these over the years...have spurs chiseled into them on 2 sides...looks like they are associated with ropes or stock...

1850's....

OK my dad has found these before too and went out to the wood pile and retrieved this one....longer but exactly the same...pointed end, chiseled marks on two corners....concave rounded top. His clearly shows something has worn rings into the concave portion like it something has spun around it.

Looks like it is made to drive into timber leaving that concave portion exposed for use.

OK so my dad said he has found these as well...he walked out to the wood pile and came back with the longer one in the photo below...exactly the same...pointed end...chiseled corners on two sides...concave rounded top. His looks to have had something attached to the concave portion that has worn grooves into the metal.

I'm thinking it is intended to be driven into timber or rock and used as an anchor..maybe a ring attached that you would attach a rope or something?

It is a cribbing spike, used to join thick lumber together.

Digger, could you posts a pic takin in sunlight without a white background.?
White almost always destroys detail of object on it.
Also what is the size,and what state was it found in.?
I think I may know what you have.
Not for dragging logs, that is easily done with a chokechain.

I have found spikes with little wings on them. It's so they won't pull loose when pounded into lumber.

I won't be able to take better pictures until later this evening. I think I may have another one in my junk pile somewhere.

They were found in Northern Calif. Approx. measurements are 5" long and 10" (guess). One end is a tapering square, the other well rounded.
I'd guess 1850's associated with mining or logging.

I don't think they were used to drag timbers. I think what sets these apart from an ordinary timber spike is the rounded top which is concave for some reason.

One of those ordinary every day objects that are not used anymore.
