Good lord, been researching this quite a bit lately and it draws the question.....were you going to be held up sooner, or later? Seems a fair bet that it was eventually going to happen.
Stagecoach robberies happened and the prizes were big, more than you would make in many years.
I have researched several, looked for one and have one that I think I could locate in the Wind River area of WY. It was a Butch Cassedy holdup that he went back and looked for several times. His partner did the actual hiding of the cache and told Butch where it was, but was killed in a gun fight before he could return with Butch. I have it marked on a TOPO. Ah yes, the bucket list! Frank
Those highwaymen were everywhere....some of those stagecoach drivers having been stopped with routine, some even twice on the same day. Records, at least those I've located and researched so far, indicate that most takes were rather small and that most of larger takes were recovered with only minimal loss. However, there is also much to be learned in regards to many possible locations that would certainly be worth putting some boots to the ground.
Seems a fair bet that it was eventually going to happen.
