His is hand etched - lot of colonials that are etched and found in north east states were usually done by the Dutch -"Machine etched" tombacs are underrated IMHO , congrats

interesting. Learn something new every day. I have found a fair amount of Dandy’s but never a tombac that had design. But this does look like it’s more primitive. While I would agree with you that some tombacs are "hand etched or even hand tooled" most are turned on a lathe (spunbacks for example) with a "machine" or on an "engine" and were scribed or etched in a similar fashion View attachment 1921287View attachment 1921288View attachment 1921289the tight repeated lines and designs show a precision of machining in the engraved image .

I used to do printmaking , specifically etching and I was able to create lines of similar design as my button with a degree of ease after a fair amount of practice. I graduated with a BFA in printmaking so I did a fair amount of printmaking.
Having said that, there is always room for other thoughts
