Hello and Happy New Year to all.

Seems like forever since I posted, its been three weeks. :)
Well, I was looking over my find logs from years past and I have NEVER hunted in Michigan in January. This year, we are still without snow and the temps are around 40 degrees every day of late and with the holiday hustle bustle over, I had some time the past two days to get out and hunt a bit. I hit two schools, one each day, about 3 plus hours hunt time total. The first was one I didn't search yet and the second I did in August. Covered the woodchips and a little in the grass around the play areas.

I was just happy to be out swinging but I really started the year off with a bang. At the first school I was finding tons of coins and some jewelry and then I hit on a nice 14kt gold wedding band near the swingset. It's about size 7, so it must be a woman's band. I was elated and may day was made. Today at the second school, finds were slow as I had cleaned the place out in August. I managed a few jewelry pieces and about 25 coins. The last area I searched was the tot lot, heading toward my truck. In it, I found an earring at the bottom of the slide. It looked like a kids earring, big and gaudie, so I just stuck it in my pouch and headed home, still happy about yesterday's gold. When I got home, to my surprise, it is hallmarked 750 (18kt) gold and the pinkish/red stone appears to be a diamond (which I'll have to verify). There's another hallmark on the earring , A star logo thingie, followed by 860 V1 (or VI?). The stone is about 5mm diameter, I estimate a 1/4 or 1/3 carat stone and baby does it sparkle! So it may be a fancy red diamond? Needless to say I was really happy now.

Oh, a couple more surprises, while cleaning the clad up I heard that sweet chinging sound of silver. Our ears are trained aren't they ...lol. Sure enough, there was a 1953 D Roose 10 center in my pouch, and also a 1946 wheatie...bonus babies!

I ended up with $9.61 in clad 121 coins and quite a few trinket jewelry pieces and dang, had a lot of fun metal detecting in January in Michigan's not frozen ground.

Happy hunting to all, thanks for reading.

Here's some photos of today's finds.

Smiles!

Enjoyed your article in W&E treasure. I too like working playgrounds. And although I don't own a TR machine, I have been detecting since the mid 80's and always l liked the look of that Garrett TR machine.

Anyway, just thought I would send a "good job" on the article.

Ted Mac

Also, I am in the Toledo OH area, if you ever want to get together and do some detecting, let me know.

Now that's how to start the year off Boobydo! Fantastic finds, thanks for sharing and good luck next time out.

Back with a vengence I see. Superb finds BDoo! Keep those of us who can't hunt because of weather posted so we don't lose all hope!

Hi Boobydoo ! I'm new here.......just registered Jan. 07, 2007. Beautiful pics and congrats !

I really enjoyed your article "Schoolyard Success" in the Feb. issue of W&E Treasures magazine.
Covering 100% of each wood chip area with an older Garrett TR machine, heavier, no arm cup and
the small 7" dia. coil, must take a lot of work, but sure looks like it's worth the effort !! Thanks for
the good tips ;).
I purchased my first metal detector, the Garrett Ace250, about one year ago. Still using it with the
stock 6.5 x 9 elliptical coil, but plan to add the smaller 4.5 dia. sniper coil when funds allow. Also,
have my eye on the Sun Ray Invader YF-1 in-line target probe.
Got a couple of Park permits recently and found $1.73 in clad around the park benches (Q,N,D & P),
but no jewelry so far. I was really excited when I got to my first "Tot Lot" and thought for sure I
would make some great finds, but came away with nothing but foil. I concentrated on the swings, lips
of slides, around ladders, a child-size rock climbing wall, etc., all of which I thought would be the
hot spots and didn't even try the open areas. This play area has wood chips over asphalt (black top).
I'll be going back there as soon as weather and free time permits, to do a 100% search and try the other
tips mentioned in your article.

I checked your Profile and saw your age listed. Is that a recent photo of you on the cover of W&E
Treasures, or one taken some time ago ? Also, I see some of the members are calling you "Bob".......
...is Calder Hawke your pen name ?

Thanks.........Todd

Wow, very nice! I hope I can do as well. Since I am new at this, and just got my own md, I don't have much except junk. I am practicing in my yard.

Now that's the way to kick off a new year!
Great Stuff! ;D

GREAT FINDS! Congrats!

Enjoying the warm weather i see.

Could you send the horseshoe my way....LOL :D Nice rings... Great start for the year.

Great treasure you found there! I, too, read the latest magazine article. You are better than the average detectorist, bud! You have indubitably learned your machine!

BDoo,
