Start knitting here

Found these two little hearts yesterday at my mom's house. I don't know much about them except they are metal, heart shaped and they have the writing on both sides of the hearts. Anyone got any more info?

I don't know... but I bet it's a cheater marker to let the knitter know where to start after the project got set down for a while...

Oh, my gawd. It's been longer than I want to admit since I've seen one of those things.

Way the heck back when Red Heart yarn ("red heart" - get it?) was "real wool," they used to have one of those things folded over the end of the yarn so that when you pulled on that end, you'd be pulling the yarn from the center ("center-pull ball").

I think that was a new concept since "the war," when you'd get a skein of yarn in a hank - that you'd have to wind up into a ball yourself, once you talked some poor sap into holding the hank part for ya, while you did the winding.

We're talkin' late 50s, early 60s. Dang, I feel old! :P

Thank you very much for the info. There is a ton of stuff like this in the backyard of my mother's 100+ year old home and I keep finding new things everytime I go. I am going to keep swinging until she sells the place. I refuse to believe that there isn't at least ONE silver coin there somewhere.

Ok, I couldn't stand it, and called the company (they don't have email contact so far). The operator connected me with someone who remembers them - and told me a little bit more.

They were a "limited edition" thing - used briefly as the company introduced the "center-pull ball."

The lady was very nice, very patient, and didn't even giggle or gasp when I mentioned MDing in the same sentence as yarn. Actually, her first reaction was "Ohhh, that was years and years and years ago." (She's actually a big "name" in the knitting world and that was also cool, in my book).

You're right - there's gotta be silver there somewhere! Altho all I've found on this 80-yr old property is freakin' nails and broken glass! humpf! Oh, and one canning jar lid from around the 30s or 40s
