If it's salt water, you need a bigger budget if buying new. The least expensive that I would recommend would be the Nokta Makro Legend.

I would not choose the AT-Pro for salt water, way to unstable in salt environment..

The new Minelab X-Terra Pro is fully waterproof and under $275 although they are not available yet, it is something to consider, otherwise I would consider the Equinox 700 at $699, if she or a family member is vet she can get 15% discount too by allowing them to purchase it as gift for her, warranty is still in her name.

Keep in mind that if you're doing water hunting, you're going to need a good quality long handled scoop. Those can be as expensive as an entry level detector.

So true, many think $200+/- is too much to spend on scoop but they don't take into account the resale value, you can buy a good SS scoop for $200+/- use it for 5 years and sell it later on for $150 all day long, you end up paying $10 a year for a top of the line scoop not counting the gold rings you dig.

I started in the water back in the 80's with a used Garrett XL 200
My scoop, floating sifter, waders and gloves cost more than the detector
Well worth the investment

I've seen youtube vids of the vanquish on the wet sand but haven't used one myself. It's not waterproof but is multi frequency .
