sterling flatware

Smelting it down for the silver content will cost you in time and smelting fees(fuel for smelting).

If you want to make money on silver, buy low and sell high as is.

Would I make more melting it or selling it piece by piece? Thanks so much!
silver is silver no matter the shape! I think it depends on the pattern. I bought a service for 5 two months ago. It was made in the 50's and never used. I paid scrap for the spoons and forks** then I went to a website that sells sterling tableware to help people fill in the missing pieces. They offered me even less than melt. The only way I can think of to make more than melt is sell them as a set on feeBay.

(** beware of butterknives most of the weight is in the epoxy filled handel and steel blade. probably less than 10% of the weight is silver. I offered $2 each on these because of the small amount of silver in each)

A friend and I went to an estate auction Saturday and he bought a sterling flatware set for $400.He had estimated that it had at least 40 oz of silver. He just called told me he sold it earlier today at a place that buys silver in KC and it weighed out at 75oz.He was paid $845 for it.Took 15 min for the transaction.
