I found this ring at a house that was from the 1800's and was used as a residence for people who worked at a hospital up the hill. I suspect sterling silver because it came out of the ground as if it were in the box and the ground was muddy. It is stamped with a W but no .925 or anything else. I searched this site and googled but haven't found anything like this W. Is this sterling and can anyone ID the trademark? Even if it's current it's a pretty ring. The stone is pink though it looks purple in the photo. Thanks for the help.

Beautiful ring and I would agree it looks like silver.

With no markings, I'd test with the 18k gold acid. The scratching would turn beautiful blue :) Test kits are very inexpensive.

There is a "W" inside the band. It's in the second picture. I can't find the maker....or what the W stands for. Thank you.

I would say it pre-dates whatever law or rule requires the sterling or purity stamp.

That's exciting if that is the case. I thought it might be. That law went into effect in the US in 1906.
