I am super excited about this pick. I found it in the silver plate area at a thrift store. The bottom is marked just England but it has 1930 British hallmarks near the top! Even the lid. I just left the store! Good catch! If I’m unsure whether a piece is plated or not, I scour the item for hallmarks. Fantastic that you thought to look elsewhere other than only the bottom. Congrats on a hugely profitable score!

Your post sure gives me hope to keep looking even though I never seem to find anything! What a great score, I bet you are still smiling over that one!!!

A good tip for determining sterling from plate in the absence of hallmarks is sterling will tarnish black while plate will tarnish in rainbow hues.
You scored a nice set.

Great score Don.

Btw... Gorham.

Wow, that's amazing. Is that a wingnut holding the finial knob on top?

Yes I believe it is so you can take it off when you wash it maybe.

That's a beauty and the condition looks really nice. I'd be frequenting that ts, just to be sure the platter doesn't show up a day or two later.

I finally got a chances to put it on the scale is 24.6 Troy ounces.

Wow! What a great find. Birmingham England too!! Great job JimDon!

Holy cow that’s a heavy piece great score!

Great find, congrats! :occasion14:

You have a great eye for the goodies! :notworthy:

Boombaby! Great snag. I haven't managed a big piece of sterling in AGES!
