I am still going through the church property that is dated back to the mid 1800's. I have dug many old nails, few neat items like an old marble door nob that I have been trying to clean up a little before posting a picture of it and then what just seems like scrap iron.

The thing that I have run into as of late is that I think may have found where coal used to be dumped, maybe for a coal burning stove or something like it, but the metal detector goes nuts over the coal ridden areas. When i start to dig and get the pin pointer in the whole I find the objects rather fast but it is just the coal itself that is triggering the detector and pinpointer. Is that normal? I have not really looked into it and it may be normal for coal. I hate the thought of not digging those spots but it becomes tiresome just pulling the coal out.

The good news is that I have a nice collection of coal with metal in it :laughing7:

In between snow and rain I am still plugging away at the site and have become sort of better at knowing if I am not going to dig a coin and still working on trying to figure out the hits that tease me by acting like coins.

I know you are joking about the coal with metal in it, but this website may interest you - stuff in coal. I find this fascinating and most archies will ignore it because it doesnt fit in with what they believe.

I've got an Ace 250 too and have come across " hot rocks" that kind of resemble coal and set off the detector around the DC area, but I'm not sure if coal itself does. I'm sure someone on here will know. Good luck!

rastinirv, that maybe just what it is then as I am only 35 - 45 mins away from DC. I do know that my area used to have active copper mines years ago. My son and I have walked back to the old mining dump sites and picked up rocks that had the green looking veins in them, but these do not look like those rocks. I am not joking when I say that I end up with a pile of these rocks that the pinpoint pings on.

Coal is a big obstacle for metal detectors... To answer your question, yes. Coal will set of most pin-pointers and some machines.
Keep @ it and HH !!

Certain types of coal have a high sulfur content to them,It could be any number of things that would cause anthracite to trigger a detector or pinpointer,I know once coal is sent to the coke ovens here in grundy va,Every other piece will play a song on your detector,I have no clue why either but whatever happens to the coal during the process of changing it into coke can really mess with you if you run into a patch of it out in the field.
