With the rusted out back odds are it's a civilian button and not military.

ARRC,

Odds are it's civilian with the rusted out back....I've found quite a few military themed civilian buttons over the years with rusted backs.

It's usually a dead giveaway.....2 piece buttons started about 1860 or so and were prior to that one piece construction.

Just a heads up for future reference.

Yeah buttons are not my strong suit... heh
Too much like sewing... which I actually know a bit about. heh
I have not been in a button "rich" environment... being this is florida and most butons are found on coats and such.

I do find them... but rarely and never too old.
No military or Civil War type stuff ever.
