I guess it's where i'm hunting, it's an old school but trashy. still a little overwhelmed with the new cortez, but i'm getting a little better! I dig some decent silver coin signals, showing 6 plus inches...then lose the signal???

I got 37 cents in clad, but i did hit on a 1939 Merc!!! My first dug merc!! Actually my first dug silver coin! I got a late start today because I had to work. But, tomorrow I've got all day. OK so here's pics. (new camera too, so still working on macro close ups, sorry)

Congratulations on the first silver find! My first silver was also a Merc., 33 years ago. They have always been my favorite small silver coin.
HH! David

Thanks Dave, hope to have more silver tomorrow!

Great Merc! I wanted to hunt today but didn't have time. :'(

I find when taking photos it is better to not get too crazy close. (I usually stay about 6 inches away.) Then use your Photo Manager or equivalent to crop the pic to get it closer. Seem to get better resolution that way.

Congrats on the merc! Nice coin.

I've only been at this since july 12th and have a lonestar bounty hunter
and find myself losing signals from time to time. A few times after
losing a signal, I figured I must have repositioned the coin on end
and stirring up the dirt in the hole knocks it flat and then I can
reaquire the signal. Other times, switching to all metal helps me find the target.

Good luck,
HH.

Thanks, to both of you, for your advice. Jim

Congrats on that first silver Jim! Many more to come, now.
I remember not long ago when i dug my first, also a merc, at the elementary school I attended in the early 70's. FFD

Jim,

I wrote: "I would be willing to bet that this hunting spot is very trashy with lots of iron. My suggestion is to NEVER hunt in a high trash area when you are learning a new detector. Leave that school yard for when you get 40 or 50 hours on that Cortez. When the Cortez reads a "95" but it disappears when you go to sum mode the target is usually heavily corroded iron junk. That 9" X 8" coil is bridging several targets at the same time. If you do work that area in the future you would do better with the 5.75 concentric coil. Also you should not be running the sensitivity on high in that type of situation, turn it down to about 1/2. When you get a seemingly good signal lift the coil and rescan, also sweep from several different angles, then check the target again in sum mode if it looks good."
I didn't hear back from you, so not sure what to say now? If you can be a little more specific I'll try to give you a hand sorting out that Cortez. Congrats. on the Merc. dime! Joe

Congrats on the Merc!
Mercs are my favorite! Still the sweetest looking coin minted in the US!

Good Luck on more of 'em!

Mark
