I spent the last week in Connecticut and at one point we were out exploring a river. My son and my sister each found these two items. One was found in a deeper washout section ( he eyeballed it, I got it ) and the other one was found by my sister while she was just pulling up smaller stones for her 3 year old to make shapes in the sand with! She said it was probably burried about 4 inches or so ( her kid had her doing hard labor! )

To me, they both look like crude jar lids, but that is just a guess. Before I do ANYTHING to them, I wanted to check with all the smart people here. Absolutely nothing has been done to either of them.

The first two pictures are scans, hopefully they give enough detail, that last one is just a picture with the camera.

Thanks in advance!

i agree lids or stoppers. thou i am not an expert on anything. do they feel like pottery? i would clean them or anyting . because the Patina or lichen growth my help determine the age. could be any era . necessity made all people inventive.

It'll be interesting to see what people come up with as an I.D.. I've got one similar to the more rounded one. My son picked it up while we were out together about a year and a half ago or so... The one I've got, has some brown paint on it - couldn't tell you what kind of paint though....

I probably should have added some more visible details. ;D

First, the larger one has an intersting coloring to it and to me gives the mosts hints of being a lid. What would be the top of the lid has a green coloring to it and the outer edge has a slight greening. But what would be the bottom of the lid has a brown color to it. It is also not perfectly round and what would be the lid handle is not centered. The thickness on it slants as well.

The smaller one has a much smoother texture to it and you can actually see in the picture where it looks like someone twisted the handle between their thumb and pointer finger.

They both have incredible character that are hard to describe.

Any more thoughts on these? Or should I just mark them down as lids.
Maybe wait just a little longer - you only posted 2 days ago - give it some time

I know these are not anywhere near the same but they are stone/clay and were found in a river as well. They were never positively IDed but they do look like stoppers IMO. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,319582.0.html http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,319582.0.html

Can you post a pic of yours mile-ender?

Sorry it took me so long to see this post but I think yours match well with these burnt clay carboy stoppers. The pic is from a turn of the century glass and bottle supply catalog. I think yours are worn by the river. Dont clean them. I dont know if they have any value but with so many fakes and replicas on the market nowadays, aging is desirable. ;D

Here's mine. I was mistaken when I thought it was paint - it's a glaze. It's got a diameter of just about two and a quarter inches.

Thank you for the replies, and you are right, I should have just waited a little longer. The post was getting pushed way down and I did not want to just throw a /bump in there, but probalbly should have :tongue3:

I love both of these items, they have really nice character to them in person. I will have to spend a lot more time in that river the next time I am there! And I will not clean them at all.

Yup, had them all over our farm. Just had to match tops to jugs...most didn't

But, we had dozens of each...tops (like your's show) and jugs

All pre-prohibition and during
